Abstract

Tafsir Mazhari is considered one of the authoritative and respected Qur’anic commentaries from the Indian subcontinent. Its author, Qazi Sanaullah Panipati gives special prominence to Hadith as a foundational source in interpreting the Qur’an. His method combines simplicity in expression with depth in scholarship, particularly in his use of prophetic traditions to support exegetical arguments. This paper presents a critical and analytical study of the first 10 verses (Ruku 1) of Surah Ha Meem al-Sajdah (Fussilat) in Tafsir Mazhari, focusing specifically on the Five (5) hadiths cited in this portion. The study includes:Verification of sources through reference to primary hadith collections (e.g., Sahih, Sunan, Musnad, and Mu‘jam), Assessment of the authenticity of each narration based on the judgments of classical hadith scholars, Contextual analysis of how each hadith aligns with the corresponding verse, And a discussion of the exegetical relevance of each hadith within the commentary. This research highlights Tafsir Mazhari's methodological rigor in incorporating hadith literature and showcases the careful balance the author maintains between narrative authority and interpretive clarity. The findings reveal that most of the hadiths quoted are traced to reliable sources, with many classified as Sahih or Hasan, while a few are Da'if or non-Marfu‘ (non-prophetic in chain), yet cited with scholarly awareness and appropriate contextual usage.Ultimately, the paper underscores the strong interconnection between Qur’anic exegesis and hadith sciences, especially in the scholarly tradition of the Indian subcontinent, and offers a model for methodical hadith analysis within tafsir literature.
